A professional musician since age 12, trumpet wizard Nicholas Payton serves up a romantic and sensual feast with a generous helping of straight-ahead fire on his Nonesuch debut, Into The Blue. From the first notes of the first track, "Drucilla," a musical valentine his father wrote for his mother, Payton leads the listener on a journey showcasing the young trumpeter's lyrical side.
Not shying away from the technical virtuosity that first turned heads when he burst onto the scene as a New Orleans teen, Payton engages the listener through ten tunes, from the propulsive odd-metered "Triptych" funk to the catchy romp "The Charleston Hop." Into The Blue is an homage to the lineage and roots of Nicholas Payton, and those of the music itself, adding an impressive new chapter to the amazing story of this icon-in-the-making.
