The Clayton-Hamiton Jazz Orchestra (CHJO) is both a torch-bearer for the long and proud tradition of jazz big bands and a constant innovator of the genre. Perhaps the most-respected and venerable big band on the scene today, the Grammy-nominated CHJO marks its 25th anniversary in 2010. Co-leader John Clayton is a world-class bassist and peerless arranger, having a platinum record and seven Grammy Award nominations to his credit.
Jeff Clayton, his brother and co-leader as well, is a sax and flute master who has collaborated with everyone from Ella Fitzgerald to Madonna. And third co-leader, drummer Jeff Hamilton, is a rhythm powerhouse who has soaked up the jazz drumming tradition first-hand with the likes of Ray Brown and the Count Basie Orchestra and who leads his own Jeff Hamilton Trio and is also the drummer of choice for Diane Krall.
“Talk about virtuosity, talk about versatility, talk about vehemence and verve, you’ve got to be talking about the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.”
— CD Review
The CHJO is consistently recognized by peers and audiences alike for the high level of its musicianship and arrangements and for both keeping the big band tradition alive and thriving.
